Rock Are 2-0 After Win Over Owen Sound

by Mike Hancock

The Oakville Rock improved to 2-0 in MSL Classic play, defeating the Owen Sound Lacrosse Club by a score of 11-8 at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC) in Oakville, ON on Thursday night.

A 6-3 first quarter lead paced the Rock to their second win of the season.  Ryan Smith scored three goals in the opening frame and looked unstoppable.  Jack Kelly, in his MSL debut, opened the scoring with a power play strike for his first MSL goal.  Ryan Lanchbury, also making his MSL debut, potted his first MSL goal as well.  Rounding out the first quarter Rock tallies was Mike McCannell who scored on an outside rocket.

The Rock were up 6-3 to begin the second quarter and McCannell showed Rock fans that he can also get it done on the inside as he took the ball to the goal for his second of the game, giving Oakville a 7-3 lead just over a minute in.  However, Owen Sound's Jake McNabb answered McCannell's goal exactly 30 seconds later to establish the back and forth script that would play out for the rest of the night.  Owen Sound scored another two before the half to trail 7-6.

The third quarter was all Rock, highlighted by Smith's fourth goal of the game.  At the end of 45, it was 11-6 Oakville.

Owen Sound tallied a pair very late in the fourth quarter to make the final 11-8.

The goaltenders' performances in this game should not be overlooked.  If you have a minute, this game is worth the rewatch as both Craig Wende in the Rock cage and Rylan Hartley in the Owen Sound net, both made several ten bell saves.  Some real highlight material by both tenders.

After playing twice in the opening week, the Rock will play just once in week 2.  Oakville takes on Cobourg on Thursday night, August 5th at 8pm.
