Rose Makes 40 Saves As Oakville Dominates Defending Champs
Oakville, ON – The Oakville Rock (2-2) dismantled the Peterborough Lakers (4-1), 17-4 on Monday night at the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre in Oakville, ON. This was the first loss of the season for back-to-back defending Mann Cup Champions.
The Rock offence got rolling right out of the gate with two goals just 2:07 into the opening frame, Ryan Smith and Andrew Kew picked up the markers. The home side followed that up with four unanswered goals, including a pair from the crafty righty Rob Hellyer taking a 6-0 lead. The Lakers’ Josh Currier finally solved Nick Rose putting the visitors on the board, followed by each team adding one more to close out a wild first period. Oakville held a five-goal margin 7-2 after one.
Kiel Matisz scored the lone goal in the second period for the Lakers. On the Oakville side of the equation, the Rock offence continued to surge, scoring 6 unanswered goals highlighted by Dan Craig’s hat trick. Rob Hellyer chipped in another one giving him three goals on the night as well. This all led to the Rock taking a commanding 14-3 lead after 40 minutes.
Corey Small opened the third on the man advantage putting the fourth goal up on the board. It was evident that visitors were frustrated, tempers boiled over resulting into 63 minutes in penalties for Peterborough in the third period alone. Oakville added three more goals including Dan Craig’s fourth of the night to close out the contest.
The Rock will be back in action on Wednesday night at 8pm for a duel with Brooklin LC. Oakville’s next home game is Monday, June 17 at 8pm against Brooklin. Fans can watch every game this season live on lacrosse-tv.com.
